Below is some information on arrival dates for Lesser Kestrels and Amur Falcons from Dr Zephné Bernitz.
We have been monitoring the Middelburg roost since 1995/96, first only casually, counting birds once a year in late January, and then watching for arrival dates and doing more accurate counts.
The first lessers of the season arrive between the 19th and 25th of October, often on the wind of a storm front. I always see the first birds on stormy days, never a clear day. 2003 was the first year we were able to establish the date for the first arrival of the Amurs too, namely Dec 4th. A lady in a house opposite the roost said there were none on the 3rd, and plenty on the 4th. I also have a record of first sighting of Amur falcons in the Wakkerstroom 2004 -Nov 25th , Memel -5th December, 2003, 4th December, Middelburg 2004.
