Fox Kestrels at fires in central Africa

Fox Kestrels (Falco alopex) have been recorded at fires across their range in Africa. Christian Boix-Hinzen of Tropical Birding observed this with his group of birder in Cameroon in March 2006. Click on the picture above to see the larger version of the fire where the Fox Kestrels were foraging. More pictures are available in the Gallery showing the Fox Kestrels circling in the smoke.

Also, of interest is to note the distribution of fires in Africa taken from satellite pictures (Cahoon, D.R, Stocks, B.J, Levine, J.S., Cofer, W.R. & O’Neill, K.P. 1992. Seasonal distribution of African savanna fires. Nature 359: 812-813). As can be seen on the map, the distribution of fires in January 1987 mimic the distribution of the Fox Kestrel. Thus, Fox Kestrels live in a habitat where fires are common and fires most probably play an important role of the foraging behaviour of these birds during this time of year.
